And because of its location in the former East Germany, the Altstadt ("old city") didn't undergo the rebuilding at the pace which took place in the former West Germany. Today, however, the Altstadt is largely revitalized, as evidenced by the restored structures and the occasional crane that may be spotted along the skyline. This particular stretch of the canal is probably its busiest, due to the presence of the train station (out of sight) to the left, opposite the domed church of San Simeon Piccolo. The boat traffic here is typical of the traffic throughout the city, although the traffic is slower on the smaller canals. (The Ursulines at this location tended to the French and British wounded during the Battle of QuÃ©bec in 1759 when the city fell from French control to the British.) You might need a map to find this street, however; it's rather small and it isn't one of the more heavily-trafficked streets in the city. (The neighborhood has been protected by law since 1964.) Although the commerce and the shipping that once took place in this part of the city have moved to different parts of MontrÃ©al, the area plays a role as a tourist attraction (as evidenced by the word "Souvenirs" on the awning on the building to the left). But anyone willing to get up early enough can beat the crowds and take a stroll in what is, practically speaking, a neighborhood in Old Europe. To the left is Le MarchÃ© Bonsecours, a public market built in 1844 that shortly therafter briefly served as a home to Canada's Parliament and later, as MontrÃ©al's City Hall. To the right, among the storefronts, one can find various shops as well as an auberge (hostel). If you're there early enough on an autumn morning you can take in a pretty relaxing scene.
