Dampfschiffe auf der Elbe

Dresden, Deutschland

Referred to as "das Elbflorenz" or "Florenz an der Elbe" since the early nineteenth century because of its elegance and architecture, the German city of Dresden was destroyed in Allied firebombing raids from 13 – 15 February 1945. And because of its location in the former East Germany, the Altstadt ("old city") didn't undergo the rebuilding at the pace which took place in the former West Germany. Today, however, the Altstadt is largely revitalized, as evidenced by the restored structures and the occasional crane that may be spotted along the skyline. Photo © copyright by WG Phelan.
